The Church of St. Nicholas and the Jesuit College

The Church of St. Nicholas and the Jesuit College

The Baroque architecture of the facades and the interiors of the church swell out in waves as though in constant dynamic motion.
A series of interlocking ovals creates the impression of lightness and dematerialisation. They appear to contradict the law of gravity, with the area seeming to be suspended in the air. The vertical movement looks as though it has been transformed into flames that flare up toward the heavens. An optical illusion of movement, sophisticated lighting, a dematerialised area of spirituality. The mystery of the earth thus finds its counterpart in the yearning for heaven.
This spatial syncopation is a unique phenomenon in the annals of architecture. The Church of St. Nicholas is not only the most beautiful Baroque building in Prague, but one of the crowning glories of the whole of European Baroque architecture.
It was created in honour of the bishop St. Nicholas, who helped the poor and those who were persecuted unjustly. In the ceiling fresco he is also celebrated as the patron of seagoing trade.
The adjoining building of the former Jesuit college in its austerity and simplicity contrasts with the magnificent architecture of the church.
