The Church and Convent of St. George

The Church and Convent of St. George

The oldest convent in Prague, founded by the Bohemian ruler in 973 for Benedictine sisters in the immediate vicinity of the cathedral, at the same time as Prague was made an independent bishopric. Its first abbess was Mlada, a member of the ducal family, who had the right to crown the Bohemian queen.
The church of St. George is the best preserved Romanesque building in Prague, although the structure is partially concealed by a Baroque facade. The weightiness of the basic structure contrasts with the lightness and loftiness of the lacework of linked windows. This architecture gives us some idea of what Prague was like 1000 years ago.
Right from the time it was first built, the church of St. George was used as a burying place for members of the ruling Přemyslid dynasty, including the Duchess St. Ludmila.
