The Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia

The Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia

The convent was founded in 1234 by the king's daughter, St. Agnes of Bohemia. She invited the Poor Clare sisters to live in the convent and herself became a member of the order.
It was in these buildings, under the vaulted roofs, that St Agnes received letters from St. Clare of Assisi. She pondered on them alone and in silence in her oratory.
The pure and noble principles of the order of the Poor Clares are reflected in the splendid early Gothic architecture of the convent. The complex contains several churches and chapels. The Church of St. Francis was where St. Agnes of Bohemia made her solemn profession, and the Church of the Holy Saviour was where she used to pray and where her remains were originally buried.
